Tool of the Month May 2018

Welcome to May’s Tool of the Month blog post!
This month a brief look at steel rulers....
Picture of David Stephenson’s 150mm, 300mm and 600mm rulers
150mm, 300mm and 600mm rulers
They won’t win any prizes for being the most interesting or most attractive tool but quality steel rulers are very important in the pursuit of accuracy!

Rulers are not only used to mark out furniture components and joints, they are also used to set up machine fences and the height of blades/cutters... so pretty important! But what makes a good ruler? and what sizes are most useful?

A good steel rule should be accurate with a dull finish (easily to see) and the markings/numbers should be clearly etched. Size wise I mainly use 150mm, 300mm and 600mm rulers, as these cover most of my day to day measuring requirements. Picking a 300mm steel rule would be a good starting point if you’re building a set of tools from scratch!

That’s all for May, see you next month!
