Welcome to August’s Tool of the Month blog post! This month a quick look at a basic double sided diamond stone... Diamond stones are a fast, low fuss type of sharpening stone. Made by bonding diamond particles to a metal plate they are very long lasting, and providing the plate is flat to begin with will always stay flat unlike oil or water stones.
Often they are available as a double sided stone, with a corse 400grit side for flattening and removing nicks, and a finer 1000grit side for honing. Other grits are available but these two are probably the most useful! You can use a diamond stone dry, but for best results use water. This stone is from Axminster and was pretty cheap at around £20-£30 when i bought it in 2010. It’s a good option for those new to sharpening and wanting to try a diamond stone without forking out £100 for a DMT! That’s it for August, look out for September’s blog post in a few weeks.
